Michael is extremely warm and friendly, and gives really constructive feedback. He's also helped me declutter some of my confusions related to my career progression.
Michael was able to get straight to the point on how to pivot to design. He was able to talk through which strengths I should utilise in design, whether it is a focus in Service Design or UI/UX Design.
Straight to the point, and gives both inspiring and pointed feedback for me to work on. So far, made me grateful and self-aware about where I am now.
Michael gave his own personal perspective on navigating through UX in product design vs. marketing, which helped me understand another aspect of UX design that I need to better define in my priorities. In addition to that, he really encouraged me to find my voice and perspective to leverage for networking/job search. Michael asks me many questions that challenge my perspective as a designer while affirming my value as a designer with a unique background. He never diminishes my concerns but provides a positive perspective on how to be more confident and bold.
We covered the following topics during the mentoring session : 1. UX designer has to facilitate different stakeholders to understand the problem. 2. Tell a better story, less design artifact but more design rationale 3. Get over feeling insecure at work. Michael is a great mentor who would discover your strengths and give you the confidence to grow. After the conversion with Michael, I have a better idea to enhance my design portfolio and improve my presentation skill.
We discussed how to reach out to people, what recruiters are actually looking for in a portfolio? How not to focus just on the solution but explain the design process behind it.
He really helped me get a clearer sense of how to grow in my career and how I can navigate the market. I got good vibes that he is very open to talking with junior designers and wants to help! It was great meeting him and I hope to be able to speak with him again!
He understands that there is many different path of career and we have the same thinking of not fitting in but trying to be more open to the new way of cooperation and working structure as a creative. He helps me to define my career direction and how I can improve my resume and be focus on my strengths. And I got the job after I revised my resume.
Michael provided guidance using probing questions and gave me valuable insights on what I need to improve for my portfolio. He was very approachable and honest. I am really thankful for the encouragement he has given me during the call, especially in times of Covid-19.
Michael is amazing. We talked mostly how to show your work when it comes to applying for senior positions which is super important as I am right now transitioning to the next level.
Michael was awesome. He said a designer's greatest tool is empathy and during our conversation he demonstrated that in spades. He gave actionable, thoughtful, and kind advice and went out of his way to devote over an hour to speaking with me. I'm incredibly thankful to have met him through ADPList!
Provided a very good guide to me that how to enter my ideal job easily. He taught me how to improve my portfolio and develop a Breyer show case studies.
Michael is a very energetic and approachable mentor, with some great advice! As I am a young designer, he gave me some great insights about his thoughts on the future of the industry as well as how he leveraged his college experiences to work at IBM iX. He also reviewed my portfolio before our meeting, and provided me with personalized feedback and next steps. Michael has some great insights on not only the industry, but also one's personal career trajectory within this dynamic space. I would definitely encourage a talk with him regardless of what stage you are at in your career!
Michael was a very approachable person to talk to, and gave me lots of advice on finding my own voice and journey in design, and encouraged me to leverage my unique background in computer science and architecture to design. He also reviewed my portfolio before our meeting, so he was able to give me advice on emphasizing my own storytelling and design rationale rather than focusing on simply the process. Would definitely encourage a talk with him if you're looking for anything from career advice to portfolio reviews!
Michael gave a lot of his time to have a fun conversation with me about the design industry in HK, the work they do in IBM iX, and the future of product design. He was a joy to talk to, giving both broad and specific advice about improving my personal storytelling as a designer, and how I should stay true to what I'm passionate about rather than adjusting to market demands. He also gave specific suggestions on which companies to go for with regards to my interests. A lovely mentor and great conversation!
Michael listened really well to my background and challenged me to think about where my strengths might be as someone who is both analytical and creative. Honestly, I'm a bit mind blown that he was able to connect the two (and my culture) together for me. He gave me a lot of great practical advice as to how to execute service design at a job and in my portfolio. Ultimately, he encouraged me to think about where I want design to take me in the future.
I really enjoyed the conversation we had. I got a lot of inspiration from Michael about how to tell a compelling story through reflection. Also, he gave me some ideas in term of making progress for my career.
I had a mentor session with Michael regarding career advice. Because of my visa status, my situation becomes extremely complicated. I appreciate that Michael took the time to get to know me first and explored all possibilities with me. He didn't just talk in general but really think from my perspective to analyze what is best for me. I had a clear picture in terms of what I should do/try next. Thanks to Michael for all the sharing, I felt more motivated and positive to take my next step.
Talking about personal experiences and grow with a base, being visual design for now, then slowly branch out strategically. We talked about how to grow my career, what's missing on the online portfolio, and how to communicate with clients to find a balance for corporate designs
Michale has helped me on how to get stronger as a Designer, Design point of view, and decision; helping me envision in order to make better decision
Michael provided a great balance of providing critique and explaining how I can improve within those areas. He also provided useful advice that made me rethink how I approach planning out my case studies and how I can stand out in interviews. I received helpful interview tips and constructive critique on areas of my portfolio that I can improve.
The best part would be the career coaching. Michael understood my situation and difficulties, found out the key missing point of me in a brief time. Inspiring me through real examples and his design experience. That is awesome. This mentor session 'unlimited' my thoughts, not only focus on a job title or job duties currently but the relationship between the whole design industry in HK development and personal growth.
He gave me some advise on how to improve my portfolio, especially the feedback on the research plan is really helpful. Michael also gave me some insight about the ux career in HK.
Michael was refreshingly honest in his feedback, his advice really helped me put things into perspective and understand a little bit better on how I can improve the way I showcase work to clients and prospective employers. He was very easy to talk to, without keeping time. Almost felt like I was catching up with a friend. I think, he renewed my confidence, I can "sell" my work better and support my thinking behind it. As a result, I have been involved in several interviews (now in 2nd and 3rd stages) with quite a few companies since then! Great morale booster and overall a great guy.
Michael helped me understand the missing pieces of my portfolio. He helped me see my work from a recruiter's point of view. I got the right direction and to build my portfolio!
The best part was, Michael didn't just critique my portfolio or resume, he went out of his way to actually draw it down for me how the actual format of the resume could be like, something that was unique as compared to my other sessions. Our meeting was engaging, we went through my first portfolio case study where I learnt about how to improve the story telling aspect of it. Even after our review, Michael was open to answering any questions I had through LinkedIn which helped me improve my portfolio further. My key takeaway from this session was my work should reflect my strengths and interests.
Michael shared very strong insights towards design storytelling, breaking into the industry, and crafting a strong portfolio! Michael helped me grow towards my career trajectory by challenging me to infuse storytelling into design while understanding proper techniques for framing and identifying the right problems to solve!
He is blunt! Which is very much required. Take it positively and use it to your advantage. If your portfolio sucks, he will call it out and that’s where it works!
