Niall is an amazing mentor and an inspiring leader. We talked about career, vision, design and collaboration and I felt really lucky to have some of his time ! He also take care to follow up and to really get to know you. A great time! ///
Niall is incredibly experienced and can give some really interesting insights on a problem you might come across as a UX designer. He helped me to understand that there should be much broader approach when you are a designer at a small startup and that I should look deeper into business side of things.
Niall offered me a great perspective on where I am in my career and how I should approach making the next steps. He was a great listener and really focussed on understanding the challenges I was having at the time. We also had a great chat about the industry in general, and I left the conversation feeling really energised and motivated to push myself in my career aspirations. Cheers Niall!
He is a wonderful listener and shares wonderful stories from his experience. Niall has a breadth of experience in design leadership and provides insights based on the mentee's context and challenges. Great conversation!
Being a fresh graduate of experience design, I was awakened by the session with Niall. He first asked me about myself and what my goals are. He then spoke a bit about his journey as a designer and took me through the design process they use at Adidas. He then reviews my portfolio which was a total game changer for me. He told me exactly were I stand as a designer in the current times and gave me a whole new perspective about it. It was very interesting for me to learn about how design directors think and it helped me a lot to grow as a designer. He gave me various touch points that I should cover to stand out as a designer and helped me start with a new approach.
3 highlights in the mentoring session: 1. Methods about developing my design career strategically. This part answered questions such as: What should I pay attention to when applying for a design job? How can I make a job valuable to the next job? What should I focus on in the early stage of my career? How to set goals (hard & soft skills) for a new job? 2. Insights on being a UX designer in the sportswear industry. I am keen to work for sportswear brands like Adidas/Nike due to my passion. Niall reminded me that the nature of UX design in this specific industry is highly related to E-commerce and not so much to the sports itself. This is very helpful because it makes me realize what I really need to learn if I want to achieve this goal. 3. Niall’s inspiring design journey. From Niall’s story, I clearly understand that I shouldn’t chase job titles or big brand names because I can never know what new jobs will appear in 5 years. Instead, I should focus on developing myself as a designer and think about how can I bring value to companies.
Niall helped me think about where I am in my design career. He also gave me some actionable insights on my portfolio with regard to how a manager might experience it. He's helped me figure out the areas of design that I'd like to focus on and build expertise in.
Niall is a rare blend of someone who listens well, empathises, and able to connect ideas to give you insights to reframe challenges. We had a great conversation that left me with some actionable ways forward - thank you for all that you do for the design community!
